New CD Album Releases, 3-2-2010: Peter Gabriel, Blake Shelton, Alice in Wonderland Soundtrack Not much that looks real promising in new releases this week. Just on general marketing tie ins, the big enchilada is probably Danny Elfman's inevitable soundtrack album for the Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland movie.
For reasons that are not entirely obvious to me, some people regard Peter Gabriel as a major artist. One of the top ways you can tell he's an Important Artist is that he generally seems to put out about one record every 10 years or so. Ex-Lax might help get his stuff moving. Still, he made a couple of sharp pop singles 20ish years ago.
Anyway, he's back this week with Scratch My Back. At that, it's an album of covers, so he doesn't even have the excuse that he's been slaving over the compositions. These are apparently all orchestral arrangements, with no guitar or drums. Bowie's "Heroes" seems pretty common, but I am glad to see someone covering "The Boy in the Bubble."
