New CD Album Releases, 1-26-2009: Patty Griffin, The Magnetic Fields, Pat Metheny Downtown Church is the new album by Patty Griffin. I won't claim much expertise in her repertoire, but she's generally considered one of the premier Americana or folk artists going. What I'm hearing here sounds pretty listenable. She's about something. I particularly appreciate the gospel and gospel flavors. For someone not known as a commercial powerhouse presenting an album of gospel and spirituals, I'm pleased to note that she's rated as high as #9 at Amazon currently.
Stephin Merritt's Magnetic Fields are back with Realism. Just on the basis of preview snips, this sounds like something that would be worth hearing at least once or twice. But then, I'm always inclined to give this guy the benefit of the doubt for having created "All My Little Words."
Pat Metheny has Orchestrion. The big point here is that he's managed to create a full orhcestra effect himself, all based on treatments of his guitar signal. I don't know from what I've heard if it's especially compositionally memorable, but it's a fairly impressive orhcestra effect at least.
