New CD Album Releases, 10-13-2009: Flaming Lips, Bob Dylan, Brian Setzer God bless the Flaming Lips, one of the most underrated bands of the modern era. The authors of "Sponge Bob and Patrick Confront the Psychic Wall of Energy" and "A Spoonful Weighs a Ton" are back with Embryonic. This is one of only three or four acts working today on whom I would spend actual money on a new album unheard. I'm waiting with baited breath for this to show up from Amazon.
The #4 album at Amazon currently is Christmas in the Heart from Bob Dylan. He's made an album of traditional Christmas songs with with rich instruments and warm harmony vocals. The idea of Bob Dylan seriously singing "Here Comes Santa Claus" sounds freaky - which is an argument for it. On the other hand, his voice is so far shot at this late date that he sounds like a parody of Tom Waits. I just don't know what to think of this - which is a good thing, if I have to think on it.
Brian Setzer is back with his groovy orchestra and an album of original songs intended to sound like 1940's and 50's film noir music, Songs from Lonely Avenue.
