New CD Album Releases, 7-21-2009: Michael Jackson, Cheap Trick The main item of interest this week is the fortuitously timed Hip-O Hello World: The Motown Solo Collection from Michael Jackson, in the works well before his recent passing. This 71 track three CD set contains Jackson's entire Motown solo catalog, ie pre-Off the Wall. These are not his most famous recordings or particularly a major basis of his huge presence, but there were a bunch of good hits in this material.
"Rockin' Robin" in particular is a somewhat underappreciated gem in particular - to the extent that such a big hit could be considered underappreciated. But I would consider this vocal performance in particular to be one of his very best. Jackie Wilson himself couldn't have done any better with this.
Beyond that, the pickings are pretty slim. They haven't much impressed anyone in recent years, but it's good to see Cheap Trick still doing their thing. The Latest is their first album in three years. Never know when that Tricky Rick Nielsen is going to come up with a little gem.
