Season 4, Episode 13 "Ain't That a Shame"
Air date: 6-14-05
God love Dutch Wagenbach, he's so proud of the black eye that he's sporting after fighting Billings in the parking lot, and heading for Vic when Lem and Shane had intervened. The mocking and torment have stopped cold. "Damned right, I'm proud."
Claudette, naturally, was skeptical of the pissing match. "Men- it doesn't matter if you're 5 or 65, it's all about pecking order on the playground."
To which, Dutch utterly unapologetically replies, "You're just figuring that out?"

The writers got good use out of the classic ongoing dissimilarity in religious thought between partners Danny and Julien. After having been shot last week, Danny's laid up in the hospital. She awakes to find Julien praying over here, and is distinctly uncomfortable. Part of this may be just discomfort in having someone trying to take care of her.
This leads to a particularly good wisecrack, "As long as you're talking to the man upstairs, just ask him for a Vicodin."
She actually is a believer, but has repeatedly over the course of the series been uncomfortable with any verbalization of her religious faith.
Still, she appreciates his effort, and is moved to a very nice reconciliation scene at her home, particularly touching after a season full of strife between them.

Oh my, but please writing staff, come up with suitably bad fate next season for Emolia. She knew that Lem had given a bunch of heroin back over to the dealer from whom it came just to protect her. She knew that he had not tried to make any personal profit out of this. But the IAD has some snitch money, so she's selling out to "whoever's got the money."
This sets up her statement of the ultimate coldness of her treachery: "Vic likes me and my boy. He wants to take care of us. We can use that." That right there calls for a slow, painful death.

The closing scene in the bar was a nice moment of relief for everyone still working in the Barn, and pretty unusual in several aspects. For one thing, Vic was being solicitous of Dutch- with no ulterior motive or anything. Gooble, gobble. Gooble, gobble. One of us!
Note that Ronnie was chatting up a girlie. He's the one main player that has never in the series' history actually gotten laid.
Biggest surprise: Claudette lets her hair down. Other than her one shower scene a year or two ago, she's pretty much NEVER loosened up. Drinking in a bar? Hell, she's absolutely shooting pool! Who'da thunk it?
Cheap Trick's classic Budokan recording of "Ain't That a Shame" made for a nice choice of closing music. It's tough, good rockin' party music- yet the actual lyrics under it speak to heartbreak and tears. It's just the soundtrack as they seek closure on the deaths of their brother officers Carl Miller and Wayne Hames.
Just the contrast of pure bustling noise to the last shot of Captain Rawlings drinking alone at home quietly was very effective. After the emotional turmoil of the day, and the tears as soon as she got the door closed behind Vic earlier, she looked much more at peace.
Watching the Strike Team boys bonding is always nice. Particularly seeing the re-bonding finally coming back between Shane and Lem was good, largely because the writers have worked hard all season before slowly letting them re-unite. Thus it was most reward to watch them rassling at the end, setting Vic up with the final words of the season: "Get a room!"
Then of course they had that wordless shot of the IAD guy who they don't even know is after them sliding in the back door. But hey, after surviving a severely mad Armenian mob last season, this guy should be easy, right?
