Freaks

In 1932, Tod Browning was hot off the success of directing the famous Bela Lugosi Dracula movie, so the studio figured they were buying a horror movie when he came to them with a movie about circus Freaks.  But it really and truly horrified audiences at the time and between being a flop and being banned and censored in various jurisdictions, it pretty well was the end of Browning's career.  It was re-discovered basically during the 1960s and has become now an iconic film among now several new generations.
